Cab Calloway - “Reefer Man”

By David Jenison

Twenty-nine states had outlawed cannabis when legends J. Russel Robinson and Andy Razaf penned “Reefer Man” in 1931, but federal prohibition was still six years away. “Reefer Man” became a hit for Cab Calloway, who performed it live in the 1933 film International House, which came out 85 years ago this week. Not surprisingly, arch-prohibitionist Harry Anslinger kept a dossier on Calloway and his reefer music. Over the decades, many artists covered “Reefer Man,” including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in 2009.
