Chubby Checker - “Stoned in the Bathroom”

By David Jenison

On June 23, 1970, U.S. Customs Agents arrested Chubby Checker for cannabis possession near Niagara Falls in upstate New York. One report suggested he had as much as a quarter pound of hash. The very next year, the music icon released his first and only psychedelic album, Chequered (among other rotating titles), which unfortunately did not do well. Celebrating the publication’s 50th anniversary in 2008, Billboard declared his 1964 song “The Twist” the biggest chart hit of all time, but we prefer to remember his post-arrest psychedelia tracks like “Stoned in the Bathroom.”
