A collaboration between one of the hottest labels of the moment and one of the most popular contemporary jewelry designers is a no-brainer. On the flipside, sometimes a lot more contemplation goes into a design than meets the eye. Enter statement earrings with an actual statement.
Virgil Abloh’s Fall ’17 collection for Off-White is not only inspired by the phrase “Nothing New,” a meditation on what newness really means, and doesn’t mean, in fashion, it’s propelled by a mission to spread awareness about global warming. The brand’s statement explains: “The undercurrents behind women’s Off-White are undertones of issues facing the world. Climate change, women’s rights are at the forefront.”
So how does all that translate to a swerving, curvy pair of massive hoop earrings? They’re “based on radiating energy. The design stems from that mechanical part readily found in real life.” The design is made to be indicative of environmental harm, so Fisher “wanted to express something wasteful, like the radiant heat electrical stove.” Luckily, the interpretation is abstract, not literal, and these earrings—in silver-plated brass with a rhodium finish or plated 14-karat yellow gold—are easy, not harmful, on the eyes.
Available at Jennifer Fisher for $275 for a single earring or $535 for the pair.
