Grammy-nominated singer Halsey partnered with the Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE) on a new PSA condemning the global gag rule signed by President Trump in January. The rule prohibits funding for international aid organizations that provide or simply discuss abortions with patients (except for in cases of rape, incest and life endangerment). This prohibition will affect global programs that address HIV/AIDS and child-killing infectious diseases like Ebola, Zika and malaria.
Per the press release, Halsey "explains the many ways in which the global gag rule has serious life-threatening consequences for women around the world and also poses a threat to women domestically." The PSA, produced by ART NOT WAR, encourages people to support the Global HER Act bill introduced by Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Representative Nita Lowey of New York.
"Although it may seem like this kind of gag rule could never happen in the USA due to our constitutional right to free speech," says Halsey, "make no mistake: it absolutely could happen here. And it's part of an overall pattern and plan to deny women in the USA and abroad their right to choose what happens to their own bodies."
