American Dope Growers Union on Saturday Night Live

"Every time you buy pot from Mexico, or Colombia... you're putting an American out of work," so begins this American Dope Growers Union (ADGU) sketch from the second season of Saturday Night Live. Monty Python's Eric Idle hosted the October 1976 episode, but cast member Laraine Newman opens the ADGU commercial in a somber tone before the camera pulls back to reveal a choir that breaks into song. The near-prophetic skit parodied commercials by the now-dissolved International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which utilized a similar format to encourage people to buy American.
